The mining industry in Romania plays a significant role in the country’s economy, providing essential mineral resources for manufacturing and energy production. Romania has diverse mineral deposits and resources, allowing it to meet its manufacturing needs and import certain minerals and energy sources.
Romania also has reserves of various other minerals, such as tungsten, iron ore, zinc ore, gold, silver, and cupriferous (copper-bearing) ore. In 2007, Romania produced around 4,000 tons of tungsten, 565,000 tons of iron ore, and 47,000 tons of zinc ore.
The Mining Strategy of the Romanian Government states that the country has reserves of 760 tonnes of gold and silver, as well as 443 million tonnes of cupriferous ore.
Romania’s gold sector has promise, although local opposition to projects remains a significant risk. Meanwhile, the government has committed to phasing out coal mining by 2032 and we forecast output to decline steadily in the coming years.
